Rising Storm

This three-tiered blue and beige piece was created to spread awareness about Sea Level Rise, or SLR, with a focus on SLR's affect on coastal Bangladeshi communities.

The topmost neck piece was an experimental piece created by painting fabric to resemble the stormy waves of the ocean, and then coating the piece with a rice glue mixture. Since the agricultural communities most affected by global SLR are those who produce rice, I wanted to explore a unique material to use which could also provide impact.

Beneath the neck sits multiple layers of pleated shimmery blue fabric to represent the encroaching ocean. The textured underdress represents the farmland, with blue embroidery showing the seeping dilemma affecting coastal communities.
